If you have been looking at wood burners and need to know more about how they work and the firewood to burn in them the best place to find lots of information as well as designs of wood burners is on the internet. You will find there are two basic types of firewood, hardwood and softwood. Then there is the importance of whether the logs have been seasoned or not. Hardwoods are denser than softwoods, they have more BTU’s per volume so the give out more heat than softwoods. You will find it harder to start a fire using hardwoods, but they do burn longer and give out more heat, making them the best choice to use as firewood. However, some hardwoods are better to burn than others and this includes ash, beech and birch. On the other hand elm, popular and sycamore do not burn that well even though they are hardwoods. When it comes to softwoods, these logs burn a lot quicker because they are less dense. Softwood logs are very easy to start a fire with so they make great kindling. Softwoods release less BTUs per volume so do not release as much heat as hardwoods. They contain a lot of sap which means it is not recommended to use these logs as indoor firewood and they may deposit a large amount of Creosote in a chimney which could prove to be dangerous. The best choices to use on fires are Douglas fir, yellow pine and Spruce with Cedar being the best to use as kindling.

Now is the time to think about stocking up on firewood because you need to get this in and it needs to be somewhere nice and dry. If you can do this now so that when winter comes around your logs are nice and dry ready to be put on your open fire, you know your wood will burn well without too much smoke and it will burn a lot easier too.

If you don’t have a wood shed, you need to think about stacking your logs to protect them from the elements. Wood is expensive these days, so you need to make sure the firewood you buy is not only top quality wood, but that you keep that way until you need to use it too. Choosing a good firewood supplier means you are getting wood that has been seasoned.

This usually means the wood has been cut the previous year and has been given enough time to dry out. Unseasoned wood is very hard to burn and will end up costing you a fortune in log fuel.

Apart from this, if the wood is too new it will smoke and this is the last thing you want on an open fire or in a log burner. Good quality firewood tends to be lighter than newer wood, simply because it has had time to dry out, this is what seasoning the wood does to it. If you see cheap firewood being sold then the chances are it has not been seasoned enough.

The only way around this is to season it yourself and then burn it the following year, but you need to have a lot of space on your property to do this. There is nothing nicer than seeing well stacked firewood, it adds a certain cache to a property that makes it feel looked after.

Getting a good batch of logs to burn on an open fire can be a bit hit and miss, but it is always better to go for a local supplier.

Logs to burn as firewood need to be of a hard wood ideally, and need to have been left somewhere dry to season for at least a year.

Local suppliers will be able to tell you where the wood came from, and where it has been stored, so if you know the local area you will know that the wood has been sustainable harvested, and has been stored properly.

If you use someone local there is a good chance that you will know other people in the area who have also used wood from that supplier, so you will be able to find out in advance if the wood is good.

Local suppliers also tend to be able to supply logs in smaller batches, and for cheaper than other national suppliers. This makes it easier to find somewhere to store the wood yourself.

A good wood supplier will also be able to advise on the amount and type of wood that you should buy.

There are many suppliers of logs in Sussex, and it is not difficult to find someone to deliver log fuel for you.
